Another test. This time it was on multiple intelligences/ learning styles.
In this order my learning styles are…
Interpersonal (people smart) and Linguistic (word smart)
Musical
Naturalistic (nature smart)
Kinaesthetic (body smart)
Intrapersonal (myself smart)
Visual/ Spatial (picture smart)
I am not sure what to think of these results. I am very much interpersonal person, but I don’t know if that is the best way I learn. I have never thought of myself as a linguistic person, but I can understand how that makes sense. Music is one of my passions, but I don’t know if I learn that way. I think for different subjects I learn differently. Is that possible? If it is possible, how great that will be for how I can teach my students! By being well rounded I will be able to relate, at least in some ways, to each of my students.
Has anyone met a teacher like that? Do they even exist?

Untroubled.
My result to “Profile for Technology Literate Teachers (Professional Preparation Performance Profile)” was terrible. In all honesty, I didn’t really know what I was doing when I was taking the survey. I really can’t read my results either. BUT I can promise you right here and now, technology and I are not best friends. I was always one of those girls that tried to stay away from anything technological in school. If I didn’t have to use it, I wouldn’t. I suppose that is how I thought teaching would be too. I would only use what I had to.
I do understand the benefits of technology, but I think I will always stand my ground and say their needs to be a balance. And I suppose, for me, I just assume that I am not going to have to use that much technology. I want to teach in Title One Schools. These schools struggle with having enough resources, as it is they won’t have the “up-to-date” technology. Am I wrong, though, to assume that I won’t have to deal with as much technology? Is it ok that I am somewhat untroubled by the fact that my ProfilerPro results were so low?

Ink Free
Google Documents is a new concept to me. Before class on Tuesday, I had never even heard of Google Documents! And the only information I have heard of Google Documents has been from a video.
Google Documents seems like a good enough idea. Red ink from students and teacher’s pens would be less and less. But, because the only information I have ever heard of this idea has been so recent-and from a movie-I am wondering, has anyone actually used Google Documents…and liked it?

Eggs in One Basket...
Today I watched another video. It was very similar to the previous video I watched, but rather then having teenagers talk about their interest in technology, it was adults.
I guess…I just don’t understand. I don’t understand why these adults (and so many others) are so eager to pursue technology.
Within this video, I heard the word “community” used an incredible amount of times. I looked up the definition of “community” and one of the definitions was, “a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/community). Almost every definition I read, though, said something about living together, or being together. And this is exactly what I think of, when I think of a community. People BEING together. Developing relationships together. Working together. Is the Internet really going to give the same sort of community? Is it even going to give healthy relationships!?
One woman from the video said, “If I could re-model a classroom of today I am not sure it would be a bricks and mortar classroom.” That statement makes it sound like the classrooms of today are stuck in the “cave-man era.” It is almost like these people want to flee from everything they know to run to grass that appears greener on the other side (technology). Why can’t there be in between steps?
If anything, I did like what one woman said. “School is just one of the ways that they learn. But they also learn through their communities, at home, in museums, in libraries and of course…on line.” This, I believe is true. A variety of options will help students learn. Haven’t we all heard the phrase, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket?” Couldn’t this phrase apply to how many people are looking at technology?

A Love Hate Relationship
For my Computers/ Technology in Education Class we watched a little 4 minute clip. It had a handful of teenagers giving their opinion of technology. Now it is my turn to respond. To respond to the clip I saw, and to state my own opinion.
Question 1: Name five reasons young people want to use technology.
-Technology is easy. Convenient.
-Technology is fun.
-Technology is always changing.
-Technology is an easy way to express ones self.
-Technology gives the ability to access (learn and see) many things that one would not have been able to otherwise. For example, learning another language.
Question 2: Did you identify with any of the young people in the clip? Why?
Indeed I did identify with one of the young people from the clip. There was one girl, who was shown only once, that said, “I do not like it when people use OMG, LOL, BRB…I hate it when people use the letter U rather then you….I am a person, not a computer.” As much as I like technology, I also want to be written to like a real person, because I am. Sometimes, with all the access to technology, people stop being personable to each other. The lack of being personable is something I would, or will, miss.
Question 3: Do you agree that having instant access to everything via the internet helps you to know yourself better? Why or why not?
First of all, instant access to everything via the internet scares me. There are a lot of fabulous thing on the internet, but there are also an abundance of terrible things on the internet. Instant access to the internet will make finding terrible things all too easy.
I also do not believe that internet really helps you know yourself better. Maybe it can in a superficial way, but I think that experiences one goes through throughout life really defines who you are. How one handles situations will show their strengths and weaknesses, but it will also show ones true colors.
Question 4: Do you agree that technology helps pave the way to move forward as a civilization? Why or why not?
I do agree that technology helps pave the way to move forward as a civilization. Without pushing for improvement in technology, we would still be riding around in horse and buggy, and farming for our own survival. I wonder though, if always moving forward to the extremes our civilization does, whether or not we will regret that someday. For every decision we make, their will be some issue that comes from it.
