A Love Hate Relationship

For my Computers/ Technology in Education Class we watched a little 4 minute clip. It had a handful of teenagers giving their opinion of technology. Now it is my turn to respond. To respond to the clip I saw, and to state my own opinion.

Question 1: Name five reasons young people want to use technology.
-Technology is easy. Convenient.
-Technology is fun.
-Technology is always changing.
-Technology is an easy way to express ones self.
-Technology gives the ability to access (learn and see) many things that one would not have been able to otherwise. For example, learning another language.

Question 2: Did you identify with any of the young people in the clip? Why?
Indeed I did identify with one of the young people from the clip. There was one girl, who was shown only once, that said, “I do not like it when people use OMG, LOL, BRB…I hate it when people use the letter U rather then you….I am a person, not a computer.” As much as I like technology, I also want to be written to like a real person, because I am. Sometimes, with all the access to technology, people stop being personable to each other. The lack of being personable is something I would, or will, miss.

Question 3: Do you agree that having instant access to everything via the internet helps you to know yourself better? Why or why not?
First of all, instant access to everything via the internet scares me. There are a lot of fabulous thing on the internet, but there are also an abundance of terrible things on the internet. Instant access to the internet will make finding terrible things all too easy.
I also do not believe that internet really helps you know yourself better. Maybe it can in a superficial way, but I think that experiences one goes through throughout life really defines who you are. How one handles situations will show their strengths and weaknesses, but it will also show ones true colors.

Question 4: Do you agree that technology helps pave the way to move forward as a civilization? Why or why not?
I do agree that technology helps pave the way to move forward as a civilization. Without pushing for improvement in technology, we would still be riding around in horse and buggy, and farming for our own survival. I wonder though, if always moving forward to the extremes our civilization does, whether or not we will regret that someday. For every decision we make, their will be some issue that comes from it.

  1. I really love your answers to the video. I like how you say that technology can be used for some good things, but that there are several bad things that come with it. I like how you said that it can help people get to know themselves in a superficial way. I think even with Facebook and MySpace people can post whatever they want people to think of them, rather than who they really are. I also love the last line from question four, my Grandpa always said that every decision we make affects us for the rest of our lives. It will be interesting to see how all the decisions with technology will play out in the next 50 years...
